William’s paintings are bold, colorful, abstract contemporary. The series, “Unlimited Color,” is his highway to unlimited self expression. He tosses out the rules, looses the fine details and lets his imagination run wild. He applies vivid color combinations to geometric shapes, using light to dark shading, brilliant color blends and black and white for added pop, to create unique, original, one of a kind pieces. Often, just for fun, he paints small, unrelated images inside his painting to challenge the viewer to look a little closer. He rarely uses a paintbrush, opting to paint with unorthodox tools, such as, antique spackle knifes, brayers, paper towels, sponges, jars and pieces of wood. He paints dazzling acrylic hues to the tightly drawn canvas to achieve the vivid images that appear in his mind. His most important goal is to create art that brings joy to it’s new home through the use of Unlimited Color.
William’s art has evolved throughout his life and will continue to evolve. I can’t wait to see what he does next...William Mote was born in Odessa, Texas, and grew up in Roswell, New Mexico. Although he dreamed of being an artist and had a life long passion for creating art, he worked hard to become a chef. He started working towards being a chef at the Club House outside of Roswell, New Mexico. At the Club House, he began his quest as a dishwasher at 15 years old. Washing dishes wasn’t the ideal job for him, so on his days off, to learn how to cook, he would go to the restaurant and work for free as a line cook. It didn’t take long and he was a full time line cook. Still in high school and before turning 18, he became Assistant Head Chef, making him one of the youngest chefs in Roswell. In 1985, art school and new challenges were calling. He moved to Denver, Colorado to attend college at the Colorado Institute of Art in Denver. While in school and needing a job, he applied at The Trinity Grill, a four star restaurant and was hired on the spot as a lunch line cook. Before successfully graduating from art school, he rose in the cooking ranks to Sous Chef.
The day after William graduated from the Colorado Institute of Art in Denver, he moved to Nashville, Tennessee and began his career as an assistant art director in 1989 at a boutique agency known as Market Reach. One year later, he relocated to Dallas, Texas and was hired as art director at Duncan/Day Advertising. For a number of years, he worked on accounts in industries such as health care, banking, and insurance. With further growth potential limited, William was ready for a change and was hired as Creative Director at another Dallas area advertising agency; Quill Creative. In the two years at Quill Creative, William’s creative talents were utilized on high profile clients such as American Airlines, Texas Instruments, IBM, Frito Lay and Chuck E. Cheese Pizza. In 1994, his entrepreneurial instincts started kicking in, he launched his own ad agency, Designs by Mote, Inc. As Owner/Creative Director, he has worked on hundreds of accounts spanning every category from retail to consumer to business-to-business. He also became an expert in developing and executing highly successful innovative strategies in direct response advertising, package design, trade show booth design, print collateral and website design and coding for such notable companies as American Airlines, Southwestern Bell, NIKKO America, Alliance Data Systems and hundreds of Oil and Gas Companies. He still works at DBM today and finds time to pursue a new life direction in fine art.
